From the World Health Organization\n(WHO), \u201cCoronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness\nranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East\nRespiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV)&nbsp;and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome\n(SARS-CoV).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/diseases\/novel-coronavirus-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Coronavirus disease (COVID-19)<\/a>\u00a0is a new strain that was discovered in 2019 and has not been previously identified in humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted\nbetween animals and people. &nbsp;Detailed investigations found that SARS-CoV\nwas transmitted from civet cats to humans and MERS-CoV from dromedary camels to\nhumans. Several known coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not\nyet infected humans.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms,\nfever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. I myself am in a high-risk\ncategory, so I need to be extra careful in my interactions with other people.\nFortunately, dogs and cats can\u2019t contract Covid-19 so I\u2019m safe on that front. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Social_distancing\"><\/span>Social distancing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The simplest way to combat the spread of this virus is\nsocial distancing, and that simply means to avoid close contact with others, preferably\nat distances of 3 feet or greater. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why social distancing? We then saw extreme efforts to disinfect everything\ntheir patrons might touch \u2013 every 15 to 30 minutes. The spring 2020 semester came to a sudden halt, and places that\ntypically saw foot traffic, such as Brookings Quadrangle, lay silent due to the\nglobal pandemic caused by COVID-19.
